Laughter Yoga: My Journey from Pain to Purpose

Renu Nagpal Mumbai : Laughter does not remove pain from life, but it gives us the strength to rise above it. When we choose to laugh, even in difficult moments, we discover that healing begins from within.

A few years ago, I was diagnosed with AVN (Avascular Necrosis) of the hip. The pain was constant and frightening. Surgery was recommended, but I was not mentally prepared for it. I felt as though I had reached a dead end.

Along with the physical pain, depression slowly crept into my life. I began to fear that I might never walk normally again. The thought that my active and independent lifestyle could suddenly come to a standstill was devastating.

I had always been self-reliant, constantly on the move, and socially engaged. Now even simple movements became difficult. I had to use a walker for support, and that dependency was emotionally crushing. Each step reminded me of what I thought I was losing.

My self-esteem dropped sharply, and I began withdrawing into myself. I felt helpless, vulnerable, and afraid of becoming a burden to others. It was not just the physical pain that troubled me — it was the loss of confidence and identity that weighed heavily on my heart. My future felt uncertain.

At that point, I turned to Ayurvedic treatment, physiotherapy with Shraddha, and Laughter Yoga. Initially, laughing felt mechanical. I wondered, How could I laugh when I was in pain? But through Laughter Yoga International I learned an important principle: the body does not differentiate between real and simulated laughter.

With regular practice, the breathing exercises, clapping rhythms, and playful activities began to shift something within me. Gradually, the heaviness started lifting. My mindset changed. I began feeling lighter, more hopeful, and emotionally stronger.

Even more encouraging, my hip pain also began to reduce.

Laughter slowly became my daily therapy.

As I continued practicing, I completed the Laughter Yoga Teacher Training Course. What started as a personal healing journey soon transformed into a life mission.

I began offering free Laughter Yoga sessions in parks, communities, and senior citizens’ centers. When I met elderly participants enduring far greater pain than mine yet still choosing to laugh, I felt immense gratitude.

Instead of asking “Why me?”, I began saying “Thank you.”

Laughter not only changed my mind — it transformed my personality. I became more positive, confident, and healthier in appearance. It connected me with compassionate people committed to community service, and together we support and uplift one another.

Today, I can confidently say that Laughter Yoga has been a powerful therapy in my life. It gave me resilience, purpose, and joy — even in the midst of pain. When we laugh, we remind our body that life is still beautiful. Laughter may not change every circumstance, but it changes the spirit with which we face them.

Founder’s Reflection – Dr. Madan Kataria

Renu Nagpal’s story beautifully reflects the deeper spirit of Laughter Yoga. What begins as a simple practice of intentional laughter often grows into a powerful journey of healing and transformation. When people laugh together despite pain, fear, or uncertainty, they awaken an inner strength that modern science now recognizes as therapeutic. Renu’s courage reminds us that laughter is not merely a reaction to happiness — it is a pathway to creating happiness. Her journey from pain to purpose inspires us to remember that even in life’s most difficult moments, we can still choose laughter, resilience, and hope.

“Pain may be part of life, but laughter reminds us that joy is our natural state. The moment we laugh, healing begins.”
