Hkima Karima, Tunisia: Several years ago, her grandmother suddenly became paralyzed and bedridden, eventually passing away. This loss left Karima feeling profoundly saddened and depressed. She was prescribed various medications by doctors. However, the side effects left her feeling exhausted and in search of an alternative approach.

During this challenging period, a friend invited Karima to a Laughter Yoga session. That session became a turning point. Karima felt a spark reignite within her—something she hadn’t felt in a long time. She realized that Laughter Yoga was the missing piece she had been searching for to bring joy and happiness back into her life.

Motivated by this discovery, she immersed herself in the practice. Karima trained under Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of Laughter Yoga, and became a certified Laughter Yoga teacher. Her commitment and passion led to her being honored with the Laughter Ambassador award.

Battling Breast Cancer with Courage and Laughter

Karima’s journey took a sudden turn when she sensed something wrong during a routine medical check-up. Although her initial mammogram results came back clear, she trusted her instincts and pursued further testing, which confirmed her fear—she had breast cancer.

Within four days, she underwent surgery. But the cancer persisted, requiring a second, more complicated operation. After the procedure, complications arose—she experienced a hemorrhage and was rushed back into a seven-hour emergency surgery. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of her life.

Despite enduring immense physical and emotional pain, Karima remained resilient. She began chemotherapy, preparing herself by cutting her hair short. As the treatment progressed and her hair began to fall out, she made the bold decision to shave her head.

Throughout her ordeal, Karima turned inward to her most powerful ally—laughter. It helped her conquer fear, anxiety, and trauma. The healing power of laughter became her emotional anchor, giving her the strength to emerge not just as a survivor, but as a radiant symbol of hope.

Spreading Joy, One Laugh at a Time

Karima’s journey didn’t end with recovery. Fueled by her own healing, she continues to share the magic of Laughter Yoga. Her sessions have impacted people from all walks of life—perhaps most profoundly, teenage prisoners. Many of them opened up, shared their stories, and found solace through her joyful presence.

Participants consistently speak of how laughter transformed their moods and mental health, helping them navigate depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Karima’s work has become a beacon of light, touching lives and bringing smiles even in the darkest moments.

Despite her own trials, Karima radiates youthful energy and unshakable cheerfulness. She remains committed to her mission—spreading joy, healing hearts, and proving that laughter truly is the best medicine.
