A one-day tour was recently organized for Laughter Club members in a farm in Taiwan, owned by a physician Dr. Wang who emphasized on the importance of breathing. He talked about how Laughter Yoga is an ideal exercise for doing deep diaphragmatic breathing, which helps to bring more oxygen to the body and brain, thus maintaining good health.
When under stress or acute anxiety and depression, the oxygen level decreases and breathing becomes faster, shallow and irregular. Sometimes people hold their breath under stress which leads to accumulation of carbon dioxide in the blood. Hearty extended laughter helps to provide longer exhalation, thus ridding the lungs of residual air which is then replaced by fresh air containing a higher level of oxygen. This maintains a good physiological balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide especially during stressful situations to provide a sense of wellbeing.
In addition, participants exchanged many life changing stories and shared their experiences about how laughter helped them to breathe correctly, and how it changed their perspective and attitude towards life. Besides, regular practice of laughter and breathing exercises, Dr. Wang also suggested eating pure, clean and natural food in order to keep up a healthy balance.
