New Evolving Concept of Laughter Yoga Day-care Centers
During our recent tour to Japan, we visited two day-care facilities for seniors, where they use Laughter Yoga on a daily basis. There are many such centers in Tokyo started by our LY professionals and they have made a significant difference to the quality of life and wellbeing of the elderly.
Most people, after retirement, continue to live in their homes and are quite active socially. In fact, if they keep themselves engaged in different health building activities and exercise programs, they are even less likely to suffer from dementia. It is only when they become much older, they need to go to assisted living facilities. Statistically, Japan is known for longevity, which has led to a substantial increase in the number of senior population. Laughter Yoga is an ideal exercise routine for seniors as it is safe, easy and economical. It can help reduce the health care cost and improve the quality of life.
One day-care center conducts laughter sessions in a ‘Classroom’ style, where participants learn by writing on the blackboard and practice laughter exercises like ‘lessons’ in a classroom. This is called the “ Gaccko Style”, which means school in Japanese. They do several other activities but ever since they added Laughter Yoga in their curriculum, they have become very enthusiastic about it.
In other day-care centers, trained Laughter Yoga leaders are offering free sessions for seniors in different localities, where they can come and experience laughter exercises and later join day-care centers.
In a nutshell, Laughter Yoga is a big hit with seniors as it is helping them live a better life. It is also increasing the business for senior centers, both day-care as well as assisted living facilities. Though already prevalent in many countries; Japan is becoming a great role model for this concept.
