Mr. Tadao Okubo, my laughter-yoga teacher has written a book entitled “Recommendation of Laughter Yoga.” Subtitled “Laughter Yoga to Activate In-company Communication,” this book recommends that laughter-yoga exercise be practiced to activate internal communication in small and medium-sized enterprises.

Mr. Okubo, who had been working as a tax accountant for such enterprises in Chiba for more than 30 years, has been making every effort to promote laughter yoga based on his close business contact with these Chiba enterprises.

The main benefits of laughter yoga on the enterprises are 1) to reduce workplace stress, 2) to calm emotions, 3) to increase peak-performance, 4) to enhance creativity, and 5) to increase team-work. However, this book has focused on the benefit of increasing team-work. (Please refer to the table of contents given at the end of this blog.)

Indeed, laughter yoga serves, by connecting people, to strengthen team-work, to enhance communication skills, and to develop a working environment in which employees help and support each other willingly. After confirming its benefits in his own tax accountant’s office, he is encouraging small and medium-sized enterprises to adopt laughter yoga.

Laughter yoga, as introduced in this book, is a 5-minute laughter-yoga exercise after the morning meeting, in the same way as doing gymnastic exercises from the radio that is popular in Japan.

Starting with the warm-up, three exercises such as "Milk-shake laughter," "Lion laughter," and "One-meter laughter" are practiced, ending up with cooling-down. Although the exercise is simple, he recommends laughter yoga after proving its benefits when you practice it every day.

It will be impossible for the enterprises to spend 30 minutes or an hour doing laughter yoga as practiced in communities. I therefore think there is no way to achieve the desired results by continuing beyond such a short time-span as 5 minutes.
As the manager of an enterprise who reads this book might not understand how to practice laughter yoga, a laughter-yoga leader or teacher may need to visit them to teach them how it is done. I think one session is enough to make them understand the 5-minute exercise.

If the benefits of laughter yoga are recognized through practicing the 5-minute exercise, I think that laughter yoga can prove popular in the business world because of the other benefits beyond increasing teamwork, as already mentioned. Furthermore, as I wrote in my previous blog “Zen-Mindfulness Meditation and Laughter-Yoga Meditation," mindfulness meditation has been popularized among knowledge workers and top executives in the United States. Since laughter-yoga meditation is easier to practice than mindfulness meditation, I hope that this form of meditation will become widespread following the success of the 5-miniute laughter-yoga exercise.
