Home/Blog/Laugther Yoga at Alzheimer’s Association Conference

Tuesday, 23 April 2013 18:46:21
March 16, 2011Yesterday, I presented Laughter Yoga at the Alzheimer's Association Conference in Charleston, West Virginia. This event was referred to me by my friend, Jane, whose mother has Alzheimer's Disease.

Jane is a retired nurse and community networker. She profoundly knows the benefits of Laughter and she wanted me to share more about Laughter with this group that is near and dear to her heart.

While in Charleston, West Virginia, I was extremely grateful to attend the conference. This allowed me to get up to date facts about Alzheimer's Disease around the World.

Monday Night, I listened to a physician talk about the current trends.  The facts are staggering.

Here is some information from the Alzhiemer's Association Website:

Unpaid caregivers and stress

There are nearly 15 million Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers providing 17 billion hours of unpaid care valued at $202 billion. Facts and Figures finds that caregivers not only suffer emotionally but also physically. Because of the toll of caregiving on their own health, Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers had $7.9 billion in additional health care costs in 2010. More than 60 percent of family caregivers report high levels of stress because of the prolonged duration of caregiving and 33 percent report symptoms of depression.

Deaths from Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer’s is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. Based on mortality data from 2000-2008, death rates have declined for most major diseases while deaths from Alzheimer’s disease have risen 66 percent during the same period.

After listening to the Physician, I took a moment to reflect on my gratitude for my health, laughter yoga and all that I am grateful for in my life...

Laughter Yoga Presentation ~ Tuesday Morning

Presenting with the Assistance of my friend, Dotti, a local Art Therapist. 2nd Floor of Room full of Round tables and several displays in the hallway. Late start, technolgy complications. Begun with You Tube Video of baby laughing and giggles started to spread across the room. Blank stares. Another You Tube Video that was aired on NBC, which highlighted Madan Kataria, M.D., Laughter's Vision around the World. Video highlighting how he wants to bring Laughter Rooms to Corporations and bring more of the health benefits of laughter to cities saturated with stress, including Bangalore, India which currently has over 200 laughter clubs. People began to give themselves permission to laugh. Laugh for the Moment, laugh for being in a laughter yoga session, laugh for the health of it. The faint giggles turned into loud "Very Good Very Good YEAHS"; "Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha's" and loud laughter throughout the room...

Gratitude & Appreciaton

I came away from the Alzheimer's Association conference & Laughter Yoga Presentation with deep gratitude for the caretakers of patients with Alzheimer's Disease, the MD's caring for patients, the social workers making a difference everyday, the researchers developing new medical breakthroughs and the amazing Alzheimer's Association, which is making a difference everyday.
