Laughter, they say, is the best medicine. Well, the people of Kolkata, definitely seem to believe in it, as the city has a vibrant culture of Laughter Clubs. Laughter Yoga in Kolkata has spread rapidly as more and more people are becoming aware of the several health benefits of joining a Laughter Club and practicing Laughter Yoga.
According to a recently published report, the city has around 50 clubs with an average of 100 members each and they are all registered with the Laughing Academy of Eastern India (LAEI). Samar Kumar Mitra, secretary LAEI, said, "Life has become so mechanical that people are forgetting to laugh; thankfully, not in our City of Joy. Here members are coming in full force to try laughter as a form of therapy and are learning to laugh themselves out of mental and physical health problems."
These clubs that meet every morning, often take up various activities like education of needy kids, distribution of clothes in old-age home and organizing plays. This apart, each club also celebrates its foundation or annual day with a cultural event comprising mime show, shadow play, songs and dance. All this leads to a bond and a caring and sharing network of long term friendships.
