Laughter is indeed contagious, and for those who have experienced it, the benefits last for a long time. Engaging in laughter yoga, even for 10 to 15 minutes, will result in improved mood and emotional states. It can promote psychological well-being as well as improve quality of life.

Besides the much-publicized health and psychological benefits, laughter yoga has been proven to enhance performance at the workplace!One particular team at Sun Island Resorts discovered this quite by accident. At the start of the year, General Manager Tony Ding initiated the Courtesy Award for the operations staff. Not surprisingly, the Public Area (PA) Department won the Award, hands down, for two consecutive months! The PA Department clearly has high hopes of a hat trick. At the time of writing this post, we are awaiting the announcement of the winner for the month of April.

When asked the reason for their sparkling performance, one of the most important reasons proferred was the team's full-hearted participation in laughter yoga.

PA Manager Jenny Zhang and PA Supervisor Yao Ruizhen are certified Laughter Yoga Leaders who assist in laughter yoga sessions for resort guests. Despite their advanced ages, PA Department staff joke, banter, and laugh a great deal. When no one is looking, a few of us would sometimes spontaneously break out in song and dance, or switch to gibberish, just for fun, and promptly dissolve into fits of giggles.

The fun and laughter are infectious. It's hard to put into words. I've had the greatest fun with colleagues in the PA Department in my six years at the resort. Walking the talk, the department manager constantly and tirelessly reinforces the need to work hard and have fun doing what they do.

Having fun at work in no way detracts from the quality or value of a job well done.
