Beirut: A recent article reports how physiotherapist and Laughter Yoga leader Liliane Akiki in Beirut uses Laughter Yoga as a part of her treatment and believes it can be a natural painkiller. It is an exercise that combines breathing, stretching and self-triggered laughter exercises for mental and physical wellness. Laughter is an effective pain medicine as it releases endorphins which are natural opiates and are more potent than equivalent amounts of morphine. In fact 20 minutes of belly laughter can reduce the pain for almost two hours and even increase tolerance to pain as well.
It is a great workout that boosts the immune system and increases circulation. It has been scientifically proven that laughter can distract a patient from his pain, allowing him to sleep and perform other daily activities with greater comfort.
