It took me 40 years to understand the difference between happiness and joy, but you can know this difference in just minutes of reading this article.
Happiness vs Joy : Happiness is conditional response subject to fulfillment of your desires. We are happy when we get what we want. This means that our happiness depends upon outside conditions. In contrast, joy is your unconditional commitment to have fun from within, regardless of outside conditions. It is an emotion that can be created by indulging in joyful activities like singing, dancing, playing and laughing.
Happiness is observing or doing something you really like. There is a common belief that happiness is something that can be achieved and held on to. We look forward to that time in which we can finally be happy, but it continually recedes. Mindful happiness is a conditional response (if a certain condition is fulfilled, then I will be happy). This approach is related to how life was in the past or how it will be in the future, but it almost never occurs in the present moment. The sad fact is that even if the conditions are fulfilled, happiness is often fleeting as it is quickly displaced by new conditions (moving goalposts).
This is where Laughter Yoga comes in. It is an efficient disconnect from one’s memories. It makes it easier to handle life and its challenges, because it puts us strongly ‘in the moment’, and it’s when we are in the moment, that we are not aware of our problems. It’s as if we literally drop them. Laughter lightens up life and gives an inner coping strength.
Happiness that lasts is never found because it is actually impossible to get happy and stay happy. If life is based on obtaining happiness, then we will always fall short because life is always changing.
It is far better to seek joy
Joy though related to happiness is a much deeper experience. Where one gives up the search for happiness, one may find joy. It connects one with the source of life within. During periods of joyfulness, physiological and biochemical changes take place that afford a sense of well-being, completely altering negative outlooks on life and its challenges. Happiness requires effort –– shaping the surroundings according to tastes –– whereas joy is effortless.
Joyfulness leads to a positive state of mind that has the power to mitigate stress and pain and diffuse negative emotions like fear, anxiety, nervousness and worry, thereby enabling a person to perform better in every sphere of life.
Laughter Yoga promotes a feeling of joyfulness, an unconditional commitment to happiness. It is known that a state of mind has a direct connect with emotions. The ill effects of negative emotions are felt by the mind and lead to several problems like depression, anxiety, worry that take on physical symptoms. On the contrary, positive emotions make a person feel happy and joyful and most of the physical and mental problems are alleviated. Therefore, all one needs is to change from within, and the feelings will correspond immediately.
